Señora Melissa Creamer
Español para todos
¡Bienvenidos!
Welcome to Spanish class! It is a pleasure to see you here tonight. I hope that this short visit will help you envision more clearly what your son/daughter does during this class period.
The objective of Spanish for Everyone is to introduce the students to the skills needed in acquiring a second language. The students learn simple vocabulary, useful expressions, and phrases. They also learn about the cultures that speak the language. We try to accomplish this in a friendly, hands-on environment that will keep students motivated and interested. This is an immersed class, taught with little English. The students will learn through listening comprehension and modeling.
In this class, the students’ grades are based on performance rather than traditional testing. What this means is that the students are rarely tested with pen and paper methods. A large portion of the class time is spent speaking and practicing the skills learned, therefore, a daily class participation grade is given to all students, based upon their performance or lack thereof. It is not based on perfect pronunciation, but how hard and often they try. It is through use that the students become more comfortable. It is also the hardest thing for them to do, as they are sometimes anxious about making mistakes. Please help me by encouraging your child to relax, keep trying and “go for it.” It is my job to correct them, but I do it respectfully. Class participation accounts for 40% of the students’ final grade. Projects are weighted at 40% of the grade. All work is completed during class time.
Quizzes are the remaining 20% of your child’s grade. Although rare, I do use this as a method of assessment. All quizzes are based on listening comprehension and identification.
Being present in this class is essential. Since all of the work for this course is completed in school, it is difficult to complete it on one’s own. If a student is absent, they have as many days to make up the work, as they were absent. For instance: absent 1 day, 1 day to make up work; 4 days absent, 4 days to make up work. The students’ ability to take responsibility for their work and have a serious approach to the class are essential in passing this class.
