Español para todos II

¡Bienvenidos!

Welcome to Spanish class!  It is a pleasure to see you here tonight.  We hope that this short visit will help you envision more clearly what your son/daughter does during this class period.

The objectives of Spanish for Everyone II is to build on the introductory skills learned last year and apply the students’ knowledge to larger scaled concepts.  The students build on the simple vocabulary and expressions from last year.  They continue to learn about the cultures that speak the language.  We try to accomplish all this in a friendly, hands-on environment that will keep students motivated and interested.  This class is an immersed class, taught with little English.  The students learn through listening comprehension and modeling.

In this class, the students’ grades are based on performance rather than traditional testing.  What this means is that the students are rarely tested with pen and paper methods.  A large portion of the class time is spent speaking and practicing the skills learned, therefore, a daily class participation grade is given to all students, based upon their performance or lack thereof.  It is not based perfect pronunciation, but how hard and often they try.  It is through use that the students become more comfortable.  It is also the hardest thing for them to do, as they are sometimes anxious about making mistakes.  Please help me by encouraging your child to relax, keep trying and “go for it.”  It is my job to correct them, but I do it respectfully.  Class participation accounts for 40% of the students’ final grade.  Projects are weighted at 40% of the grade.  All work is completed during class time.

Quizzes are the remaining 20% of your child’s grade.  Although rare, I do use this as a method of assessment.  All quizzes are based on listening comprehension and identification.

Being present in this class is essential.  Since almost all of the work for this course is completed in school, it is difficult to complete it on one’s own.  If a student is absent, they have as many days to make up the work, as they were absent.  For instance:  absent 1 day, 1 day to make up work; 4 days absent, 4 days to make up work.  The students’ ability to take responsibility for their work and have a serious approach to the class are essential in passing this class.

If you have anything you would like to ask me or feel I should know about your child, please feel free to contact me.  You may also email me at: creamerm@lcmrschools.com   I look forward to an exciting and productive year.

¡Gracias!
