Supplemental Math Course Overview

This course is designed to help students improve their overall math skills and be successful in the mainstream environment. Students will have the opportunity to complete math homework, prepare for tests/quizzes, and work on organizational skills. In addition, activities in the classroom will also be used to prepare students for the HSPA, and get them thinking. Therefore, students are required to work on math related activities each day for the entire period. These include assignments issued from their regular math class as well as supplemental assignments issued during my period. Students receive 5 credits toward their graduation requirement. This is not a STUDY HALL!

Grading

Each student will receive a daily grade strictly based on effort, behavior, participation, and being prepared for class(math binder, textbook, and pencil). Each 44 minute class will be worth a total of 10 points and each 80 minute class will be worth a total of 20 points. Any disruptive behavior will result in a lower score. Grades are posted on Power School everyday. Therefore, both students and parents can access the program and keep abreast of the student’s current grade and effort in the class.

Attendance

There is very little homework issued in my class and the grade is based on class participation, therefore, attendance is a major component. If a student misses class for any reason they will automatically receive a zero for their grade for that day. They will be able to make the grade up by completing a supplemental math assignment for homework. Each student will be given 1 day to make up their work for each day missed. It will be the student’s responsibility to get make up work. If a student is absent and doesn’t take the initiative to get make up work, it will be assumed by the teacher that the student has elected not to do it. You must be in class on time. After you are late three times you will receive a detention for each class you are late. You start each quarter fresh. Each late is a 1 point deduction from that day’s grade.

Behavior Policies

Leaving Class
Students will receive a 1 point deduction and be required to sign out and in. Students out for extended periods of time will be deducted more points.

Electronic Devices
Cell phones, I pods, or any touch devices are not used for my class and therefore are not permitted. If a student chooses to bring any of these devises to class and they become visible or audible, an automatic zero will be given for the day and a detention will be assigned.

Sleeping in Class
Students are not permitted to sleep in class. If a student sleeps in class they will be warned and then given a zero for the day and a detention.

Classroom Procedures

Each day students need to bring to class a math binder, math textbook, and a pencil. These items will be checked randomly and failure to be prepared will result in a lower grade and/or detention. Students are to complete written math assignments from math class unless instructed to do a different activity. When students complete their work, they need to check their answers and get immediate feedback. If a student does not have a particular written assignment that day, then it is their responsibility to inform the instructor so that something constructive can be assigned. Students need to be engaged the entire period to get full credit.

Students are not permitted to work on any other subjects during Supplemental Math class. In addition, students will not be issued passes during Supplemental Math time to another classroom. Any student caught doing work for another class during Supplemental Math will receive a zero for the day and a detention.

During the 80 minute period, the first half of class will be spent working on homework, test/quizzes, etc. The second half of class will be spent on teacher directed activities that include HSPA work and other activities.

This class is an elective. It is designed to give students support and assist them in becoming proficient in math. Any student that is uncooperative, becomes a behavior issue, or demonstrates that they don’t want the extra help will be referred to the case manager and principal for removal.
