Calculus 2010 - 2011
| Welcome to the world of
AP Calculus. This year will be the most challenging and rewarding
year of mathematics you have ever experienced. I am excited and looking forward to a great year.
Most of you were in my Honors Pre-Calculus
last year and this year you will see a few differences. First, the
styles of questions. This year you must take what you learn and
apply it to problems you have never seen before. This course really
makes you think "outside of the box" and not just repeat
what you were taught. That is the area where student's have the
hardest adjustment. Second, you will be asked to explain the meaning
of and justify your answers. Third, we have a 90 minute period everyday.
We will need this time in order to cover all the material. You will
be required and expected to do homework every night, and some homework
will be graded.
This is the ninth year for AP Calculus
at LCMR and in the previous eight we have had some great results. I have no reason to believe this year will be any different. No one that
has completed the course has ever failed the AP Exam. The results
of the past eight years are summarized below.

I have structured the entire year around
the May exam. I expect everyone in the class to take the exam. I
have never had a student feel unprepared for the exam and no one
has ever failed the exam. If you do not plan on taking the exam
please come see me so we can talk. The objective of the class is
to get everyone to pass the AP Exam.
Grades:
Tests 75%
Homework/Notebook/Journal 25%
You will be using the TI-89 once again.
Just like last year you will have more tests that no calculator
will be allowed than tests with a calculator. Do not become dependent
on the calculator. The AP Exam is 60% no calculator and 40 % with
a calculator. The calculators cost $140 so do not lose them please.
I have a few procedures that I expect you
to follow.
You must have a three ring binder. I want three sections in the binder: Notes, homework and journal. I will check homework daily and I will also collect and grade homework periodically.
Your book must have a book cover on it.
I will do a book check several times a quarter and your book must be covered. The books are in great condition and I want them to look like that when I get
them back. Do not lose your book, they cost $100.00.
You must bring your calculator to class
on test day or else you do not use one. I will not provide one
and you cannot share. Also, you must use a pencil on the test
and once again I will not provide one. If you use pen I will deduct
points from your test.
If you take the AP test in May you do not
have to take a final exam in this class. If you do not take the
AP test your final exam will be in June along with the other final
exams.
If you are not sure about
staying in the class you really need to make that decision as soon
as possible. If things are not going well after Chapter 3, you really
need to come see me. Feel free to come talk with me at any time
if you feel you are falling behind. This is an extremely difficult
course and you cannot fall behind or you will never catch up.
I will post a monthly calendar on this web
site. We will stay extremely close to the calendar this
year. If you miss class remember you are missing a double period.
We will cover a lot of material each and every class period.
If you or your parents need to get in touch
with me either email me at obstr@lcmrschools.com
or call the main office at 884-3475 and leave a message. Emailing
is the most efficient means of getting in touch with me.
I am looking forward to a great year. If
you have any problems come see me and I will do whatever I can to
help.
Here are some web site links that may be
helpful this year. If you have any trouble with the links please
let me know. The chapter links will provide you with the notes I
hand out in class incase you misplace yours. You only get one copy
of the notes from me.
