Honors Pre - Calculus 2010 - 2011

Welcome to Honors Pre-Calculus. I am looking forward to a great year, I have heard only great things about this group. This course is the prerequisite for AP Calculus which hopefully you will be taking next year. Since it is the prerequisite you will do a few things a little different this year. The biggest change is you will have to explain your answers at times. This is to ensure that you really know and understand the material and not just memorizing an algorithm. The following is a few guidelines that you will need to understand and follow to make this a very successful year. I wish you good luck and I am looking forward to a great year.

Text Book - The text book (which costs $100) requires that you attempt every problem that I assign. If the question asks you to explain or justify your answer you must explain your enaswer to receive the full benifit of this type of problem. Also, some of the test questions will also ask you to explain and justify your answers. This is an area that the AP Calculus committee is emphasizing so you need to start this year getting used to explaining your work. If you put the time into the homework you will have no trouble with the tests. Please do not stuff your book with papers this will get me in a bad mood and class will not go well. The bindings on text books cannot handle the extra paper, so please help me out so that the books will last as long as possible.

Calculators - You will be issued a TI-89 graphing calculator. They are a very powerful too, however, you cannot become dependent on the calculator. Half of your tests will allow no calculator, so make sure you can do the work by hand. If the text book says to do the work by hand, the test on that material will require you to do the work by hand. The calculator costs $140.00 so do not lose it or you will pay for it. Do not leave your calculator in your hot car. The heat will damage the calculator and the batteries. If you drop the calculator it will break. Please be careful with them. You only need to bring them to class when I tell you, so please leave them at home so you can use them to do your homework and bring them in when I tell you.

Grades -

a. Test 75%

b. Homework/Notebook/Journal 25%

I have a few procedures that I expect you to follow.

You must have a three ring binder this year. I want three sections in the binder: Notes, homework and journal. I will collect the notebook each time we have a test or quiz. I will also collect and grade homework periodically. Each howork assignment must have on the top of the page, your Name, Section, Page Number and the Problem Numbers. When I grade your notebook I will base part of the grade on your organization and how well you follow directions.

Your book must have a book cover on it. I will do a book check several times a quarter and your book must be covered. The books are in great condition and I want them to look like that when I get them back. Do not lose your book, they cost $100.00.

You must bring your calculator to class on test day or else you do not get to use one. I will not provide you with one and you cannot share with a classmate. Also, you must use a pencil on the test and once again I will not provide one for you. If you use pen I will deduct points from your test.

If you or your parents need to get in touch with me you can either email me at obstr@lcmrschools.com or phone the office at 884-3475 and leave a message.

I am really looking forward to a great year.

If you lose your notes or need to get the notes ahead of time due to an absence the following links will get you to each set of notes for the particular chapter. I will only provide you with one copy of the notes if you lose them it is your responsibility to get the second copy.
