Go to fullsize imageEven though Helen Keller was hearing and visually impaired, she changed the public's perception of people with disabilities. She became known around the world as a symbol of strong will and determination. Her life story exemplifies ambiition and endurance. This web quest will help you to learn American Sign Language. As you learn ASL, realize the struggle Helen Keller went through.  Remember she was also blind.

This web quest will help you:

1.  Learn the American Sign Language Alphabet

2.  Learn basic signs for daily communication

This project offers the opportunity to learn a new language, take an exciting journey into the internet, and work with a partner.

With a partner, go to http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/asl.asp

With your partner, answer the questions on the paper provided.

1. What is ASL?

2. Where did it originate?

3. After reading this information, who do you think could benefit from using it?

Take the challenge and see how much you learned.  Sign language is not as easy as it looks.  Make sure you know how to “sign” your first and last name.
